The pair were four kilometers from the finish of the leg from Domat-Ems to Caslano when CSC rider Schleck lost control on a descent at approximately 60 kilometers per hour.
TV cameras captured the moment as he skid into a metal crash barrier and somersaulted into what appeared to be a deep ravine.
Fortunately, Schleck was able to pull himself back over the barrier, none the worse for the fall than a few cuts and bruises.
