Murder trial in case of transgender woman Angie Zapata begins today: The murder of transgender woman Justin “Angie” Zapata, 18, was startling for its violence and hate-crime bias. Trial begins today; the jury has been seated and opening arguments are expected this afternoon.Allen Andrade, 32, the man charged with Zapata’s death, is currently being held in Weld County jail. Andrade had met Zapata on a networking site and met at Zapata’s apartment in Greeley. The pair spent time together there and engaged in some sexual activity. Andrade, however, began to suspect Zapata was not biologically female. When questioned, Zapata denied it, but Andrade allegedly grabbed Zapata’s crotch and discovered a penis. According to a police affidavit, Andrade began punching Zapata, then hitting her in the head with a fire extinguisher. Andrade believed he had “killed it” (his words to the cops) and began cleaning the crime scene. Zapata then began to move, so Andrade hit her with the fire extinguisher again, this time succeeding in killing her.
